Overview
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course is for candidates whose first language is not English. The topics and tasks in the course are relevant to learners’ needs and relate to everyday work, study, community and social situations.
These qualifications range from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 and offer an introduction to key aspects of everyday life in the UK, while also building English language skills to support employment and career progression.
There are three different areas/courses:
- Speaking and Listening:
- • Communication at school and job interviews
- • Make friends and be part of the UK community
- Reading:
- • Reading letters, newspapers and applying for jobs
- • Improved vocabulary
- Writing:
- • Planning an event, CV and letter writing
- • Applying for work
This programme promotes community integration, social inclusion and prepares learners adequately for qualification and work life. All our courses include citizenship and employment skills.
Entry Requirements
- • Adults (aged 19 and above)
- • Have the legal right to live and work in the UK
- • Unemployed/Refugees/Asylum Seekers
- • Low-wage workers
- • Individuals whose English is not their first language
- • Have a prior ESOL qualification (if any)
Before starting, you will need to complete
- • An Initial Assessment to assess your skill level
- • An Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) session with us
Progression
By achieving these qualifications, you may be able to progress:
- • To the next level of this programme (e.g. from Entry 3 to Level 1 or from Level 1 to Level 2)
- • To another course
- • To employment (dependent on prior qualifications and experience)
- • Or to other vocational career paths, such as apprenticeships or volunteering opportunities (also depending on your qualifications and experience)
At the end of the course, you will have increased your confidence, motivation and the skills you need to be a valuable member within your community, in the workplace and/or in any further learning.

Classroom/Online/Hybrid Environment

Overview
You will learn how to speak simple English and to take part in simple conversations in everyday situations. You will learn how to communicate your needs, ideas and opinions in topics such as jobs, family, food, transport, entertainment and health.
There are no formal entry requirements to this course, but we will give you an Initial Assessment when you register.
In this course, you will learn to:
- • Speak clearly, using formal language in employment
- • Make requests and ask questions to obtain information in familiar and unfamiliar situations
- • Clearly express statements of fact and give short explanations, accounts and descriptions
- • Participate in and respect others during discussions
- • Respond to a range of questions about familiar topics
Activities that you will practise (but not limited to):
- • Role-playing activities
- • Debating to voice out your views
- • Reading newspapers and having informed discussions
- • Speaking with your child’s school
- • Improving communication with your child
- • Communicating with friends and being part of your London community
- • Speaking to help you start planning for your future goals - English for conversations
- • Speaking at a job interview
- • Participating in community activities

Overview
You will learn how to write basic letters and emails in English to communicate with your family, children’s school and employment.
You will learn how to structure sentences using punctuation such as commas, full stops, capital letters and question marks.
You will learn how to spell common words correctly and to complete simple forms such as application forms.In this course, you will learn to:
- • Plan and draft a job application letter
- • Write complete sentences using correct basic grammar and punctuation
- • Correctly spell common words and important words related to work and interests
- • Check your work and make any corrections as needed
Activities that you will practise (but not limited to):
- • Role-playing activities
- • Completing tasks individually and as a group
- • Creating posters
- • Planning events
- • Making complaints
- • Supporting your child with writing
- • Applying for work in the UK, including making applications for volunteer work placements
- • Writing a personal profile for the CV
- • Participating in community activities

Overview
You will learn how to read simple English to help you go about your daily life.
You will learn how to read basic forms, use a dictionary, read a letter from your surgery and any letters from your child’s school.
You will be able to read application forms, job adverts, basic health and safety and transport information.In this course, you will learn to:
- • Identify and read basic information when shopping
- • Read simple forms
- • Read health and safety signs
- • Read travel timetables
- •Read letters from your child’s school and medical information
Activities that you will practise (but not limited to):
- • Identify and read basic information when reading a shopping list
- • Read simple application forms
- • Read job vacancies
- • Read health and safety signs
- • Read UK transport timetables
- • Reading your bills better
- • Read letters from your child’s school and medical information
- • Reading to support your child's learning development
- • Reading and participating in community activities
- • Reading your Rights and responsibilities as a resident of the UK
