Overview

The Functional Skills Maths courses are designed to help you improve maths skills for your daily life, work and education. Topics include: numbers, fractions, percentages, ratios, measurements, data handling and shapes and space.

Functional Skills Maths qualifications are available across three Entry levels (Entry 1 to Entry 3) and two Higher levels (Level 1 and Level 2), which are completed in our various community settings.

Entry Requirements
  • • Adults (aged 19 and above)
  • • Have the legal right to live and work in the UK

Before starting, you will need to complete
  • • An Initial Assessment to assess your skill level
  • • An Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) session with us

Progression

By achieving these qualifications, you may be able to progress:

  • • To the next level of this programme (e.g. from Entry 3 to Level 1 or from Level 1 to Level 2)
  • • To another course
  • • To a vocational course (after completing Level 2)
  • • To employment (dependent on prior qualifications and experience)
  • • Or to other vocational career paths, such as apprenticeships or volunteering opportunities (also depending on your qualifications and experience)

At the end of the course, you will have increased your confidence, motivation and the skills you need to be a valuable member within your community, in the workplace and/or in any further learning.


6 Weeks Duration

9:30am-3:30pm Daytime study
4:00pm - 7:00pm Evening study
Classroom/Online/Hybrid Environment

In this course, you will learn to:
  • • Use Maths skills to support you reach your future goals
  • • Round and estimate whole numbers and decimals
  • • Workout fractions of numbers. E.g. how to find the discount amount on your journey
  • • Use money and time correctly in a job situation (E.g. Wages depending on the hours worked per week
  • • Convert and identify units of measures. E.g. Measure the space of a room
  • • Design charts and tables based on the collected data. E.g. creating a menu for a restaurant
  • • Use methods of money management and where to get advice on money issues if necessary
 
Qualifications you will receive upon completion:
  • • Functional Skills Maths (Entry Level 1- Entry Level 3)

Qualifications & course requirements:

In addition to our Entry Requirements, you should:

  • • Have passed an Entry Level 3 Maths exam (or similar) prior to the course
  • • Or scored Level 1 for Maths in the Initial Assessment
 
In this course, you will learn to:
  • • Understand and use whole numbers and negative numbers
  • • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers using a range of strategies
  • • Understand and use equivalences between common fractions, decimals and percentages
  • • Solve simple problems involving ratio, where one number is a multiple of the other and use simple formulae expressed in words
  • • Solve problems requiring calculation with common measures, including money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature and convert units of measure in the same system
  • • Know different shapes, how to draw them and work out areas and perimeters in practical situations
  • • Collect and record information, know how to draw different tables, diagrams, charts and graph
 
Qualifications you will receive upon completion:
  • • Functional Skills Maths Level 1

In addition to our Entry Requirements, you should:

  • • Have passed an Level 1 Maths exam (or similar) prior to the course
  • • Or scored Level 2 in the Initial Assessment
 
In this course, you will learn to:
  • • Understand and use whole numbers and understand negative numbers
  • • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers using a range of strategies, as well as to carry out calculation with decimal places
  • • Understand and solve problems involving ratio and proportion, including problem involving scale and use simple formulae expressed in words
  • • Understand and use equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • • Solve problems requiring calculation with common measures, including money, time, length, weight
  • • Know different 2D and 3D shapes, how to draw them and work out areas, perimeters and volumes in practical situations
  • • Collect and record information (discrete and continuous data)
  • • Know how draw different tables, diagrams, charts and graph
  • • Work out averages (mean, median, mode and range) and the likelihood of an outcome (probability)
  • • Read, write, order and compare positive and negative numbers of any size
