Become a Volunteer?
We Thank You for Volunteering, we are Looking for people like YOU
Volunteering with us gives you the chance to learn how MISDC operates and supports its learners while improving your own employability and confidence.
Volunteers are an integral part of our community learning at MISDC
Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and Language Support
Are you retired, semi-retired, Newly Qualified Teacher, ex-learner or desire to support? Would you like to help learners improve their English, Maths, ICT and Language skills? Have you the time to spare to attend English or Maths or ICT or ESOL lessons and support the class Tutor with classroom-based activities and develop learning?
Through the support of volunteers, we aim to help learners struggling with their literacy, numeracy, IT and Language skills to become confident and able, to access the education they deserve and achieve their full potential.
Why become a volunteer?
You can make a difference.
By providing weekly individual support to learners, you not only help to increase their English, Maths, ICT and Language levels and attainment but also help to foster a positive attitude to learning.
In addition to providing the learners with positive role models, volunteers can provide the opportunity to interact with professional people outside the boundaries of the Centre and an insight into the world of work.
It’s rewarding. Knowing you are making a difference
Increase your knowledge and skills:
- • Develop your communication skills, confidence and self-esteem as well as increase your social awareness and knowledge of the education sector.
Get to know the local community:
- • Increase your understanding of the neighbourhoods and the different and diverse communities of Lambeth and Lewisham. What sessions could I support and what age group are the learners?
The sessions would be English or Maths or Digital Skills either Functional Skills or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for learners who are trying to achieve an appropriate level in these areas. The learners would be aged 19 years and above and studying English or Maths or ICT or ESOL as part of another course at the Centre e.g., Health and Social Care or Early Years or standalone.
We also provide drop-in support and intervention sessions so you may be helping a small group of learners to develop their skills or on a 1 to 1 basis.
What do I need to do to get involved?
To become a volunteer, you should be able to support for at least 2 days per week, for the full provider year (September to July).
Be skilled in ESOL, English and or Maths, IT, preferably qualified in either or both subjects to at least a Level 2. A teaching qualification is not essential.
We don’t ask for specific experience but do value the following attributes in our volunteers;
- • Patience
- • Enthusiasm
- • Good listeners
- • Good communicators
- • Encouraging and a passion for English and or Maths and ICT
Our volunteers come from all walks of life and volunteer for their reasons but share a love of English, Maths and ICT and a desire to help others with their English, Maths and ICT skills, to access the education they deserve and better their future life chances and choices.
