Job search course helps Cindy gain employment

My name is Cindy Banquet and I was referred to Lambeth Adult Learning and MI Skills Development Centre’ ICT and Job Search course (Moving On) by Streatham Job Centre. I had been unemployed since July 2013 and had lost confidence and motivation.

On the first day of the programme, the tutor Mustafa clearly explained the course outline, the benefits of the course and that we will be able to search for jobs online. I felt a bit anxious as I was not very good with using computers or the internet.

During the course, my tutor made me feel at ease as he explained the topics to us and showed us what to do with simple step by step activities. I was pleased that I could complete the activities and print my work.
Slowly, I became confident in using the internet and accessing Universal Jobmatch and was able to search online for jobs. As part of the classroom activities, I was able to create a cover letter and my tutor helped me to create a professional looking CV. I learnt to upload them to Universal Jobmatch and the Indeed website.

In the second week, we had more classroom discussion and group activities regarding job searching techniques, interview techniques and the way employers ask certain questions during the interview. Understanding the interview questions from an employer’s point of view was an eye-opener for me. Also, I learnt that not all job vacancies are advertised online and that I could visit local employers and speak to them in person. This was also news to me.
I followed the advice given by my tutor and I started giving out my CV to local employers. As a result, I was able to secure an interview with Discount Centre Streatham and I am now happily in employment with them as a store assistant.

I am grateful for the support I received from MI Skills Development Centre and Lambeth Adult Learning.
