I was working part-time doing agency work and I decided that I wanted something more permanent. I knew I would need to improve my English and maths. A friend recommended MI Skills Development Centre to me as she had completed courses there.

I contacted MI and they asked me to come in and complete a pre-assessment which I did. I was enrolled on Level 1 English and maths which I successfully completed. Initially I found it challenging as I had not done any studying for a while. Through the support of Tuan and Mohammed my tutors, the other MI staff and also my fellow learners I grew in confidence. This was a turning point for me and I then progressed onto Level 2 in both English and maths. This was even more challenging but yet again through the support I received I completed and passed both qualifications.

The staff at MI knew that I wanted full time work in Care so I was contacted by Alex who explained that MI were delivering a programme in partnership with Certitude to get work as a Full Time Support Worker and at the end of the course I would have a guaranteed interview. I was delighted to have the opportunity to join this programme. The course ran over 3 weeks and was quite intense, we took part in role plays and practical demonstrations that prepared us for the type of work we would be doing. I learned about Certitude as a company, their values and what is expected of their staff. We were given health & safety, Safeguarding and mentor capacity training. The tutors, Alex and Blessing worked with us to prepare us for interview, we were helped to prepare high quality CVs tailored for the roles available. The training included group work and also focussed on presentation skills.

Due to my previous experience and the training I attended my interview with confidence and I was offered a full-time position. I started working as a full time support worker in February.

I am really happy with the opportunity that was offer to me by MI Skills Development Centre, Lambeth Adult Learning and Certitude. I am still learning and experiencing wonderful opportunities along the way by meeting new people in my new job. Not only that the people I’m caring for are also wonderful, kind and are teaching me every day what life values truly mean. All this is due to one brave decision I made by enrolling with MI. I was pleased to be able to share my experience with other learners and Lambeth Adult Learning staff at the Lambeth Adult Learning End of Year Conference in July. I have also started Level 5 Health & Social Care course at South Thames College as I would like a managerial position in the future.
