Annette’s journey to a rewarding full-time job

“My name is Annette Britton and I used to be long-term unemployed and looking for a job. I needed to brush up on my skills that I had forgotten over time and gain some new qualifications as mine were out of date. I was referred to MI Skills Development Centre by my adviser at Brixton Job Centre who booked me an appointment to attend an information and assessment session.

I went along to MI Skills Development Centre and I was a bit apprehensive at first. I was nervous about taking the first step to changing my life. I explained that I wanted to find a job and that I had been unemployed for a long time. The staff were very friendly and explained everything clearly to me. I was given English, maths and ICT assessments to determine my level and to ensure that I was put on the right course.

I was assessed as working towards Level 2 on all three courses and enrolled on a programme that allowed me to complete all three qualifications. I was also advised to enrol on an employability course. I learned interview techniques and was able to create an updated professional CV. This course really helped me with my confidence. While I was on my course I was also given the opportunity to be part of the Lambeth Adult Learning Learner Newsletter production team. I really enjoyed learning even more new skills and this really boosted my confidence. I soon found that I was helping other learners in my classes.

This did not go unnoticed and my tutor suggested that I should volunteer in the administration department at MI Skills Development Centre. I started volunteering in December 2017 with general admin duties, such as filing and contacting learners. As part of this role, I also supported customers use the IT systems to access council services. During my time volunteering, I was told that there was a vacancy as an Outreach Liaison Officer, recruiting learners for MI Skills Development Centre for their centre in Brixton and their new centre in Merton. It was easy for me to promote their courses because of my own experience, so I applied and got the job!

I started working in April this year and I am so grateful to MI Skills Development Centre and Lambeth Adult Learning for giving me the opportunity to learn new skills and boost my confidence. This has allowed me to finally get a job, and one that is so rewarding as I am able to help others – as MI Skills Development Centre and Lambeth Adult Learning helped me.”
