“My name is Yan Yan Kathy Nim. I was referred to MI ComputSolutions by Stockwell Job Centre to improve my English and maths skills to help me find work. As English is not my first language, and as I lacked confidence, I did not think that I would be able to pass the assessments to be accepted on the course. But it was not true, I was worrying too much. The staff at MI ComputSolutions were really helpful and friendly and gave me the confidence to complete the assessments. I was assessed for both English and maths at Level 1.
The tutors were friendly and fun, especially my maths tutor Kalu. He used humour to show how maths could help people get on in life and to get into work. He inspired me to work hard and I put in a lot of effort to achieve. I learned how to understand a payslip, tax codes and a lot of tax terms related to work. Within 3 months I completed the course and passed my exam. The time went so quickly. I am now working towards Level 2 maths.
I also completed an Employability course where I learned how to write a professional CV and covering letter, I learned how to prepare for and conduct myself at an interview. MI had so many resources to support me to look for work.
I saw a poster advertising a Job Fair at Westfield Shopping Centre. I went and saw that Wasabi were looking for people to join their kitchen team. I have a passion for food and have always wanted to master my cooking skills. I completed an application form, which I would not have been confident enough to do if I had not completed my courses at MI ComputSolutions. A week later I received a call inviting me to attend an interview and to do a trial shift. I used the skills that I had learned to help me through my interview and I was successful. I am now happy to be a member of Wasabi’s Kitchen team.

A few months ago I was not confident to speak in front of other people. MI’s tutors and staff have helped me to come out of my comfort zone and connect with the outside world. I have been supported and encouraged to achieve my goals and have now found paid work, for this I would really like to thank the staff at MI and Lambeth Adult Learning. But I am not finished yet. I want to help others in the community and I have applied to be a volunteer as a maths teaching assistant at MI ComputSolutions. My next goal is to study a foundation course at university.”
